Martinsville residents Mary Agan and Dana Mangifico won the fourth annual Adult Spelling Bee sponsored by the Morgan County Coalition for Literary (MCCL) on Saturday, Sept. 9.

The “Wordy Foxes” spelled the word “aardvark” to win the competition, which featured a total of 11 teams.
The second-place winners were Lyla Britton and Paulette Waltz, both of Martinsville.  Their team name was “Just for the Spell of it.”

“We’re delighted with the response to our main fundraising event,” said MCCL Executive Director David Reddick. “We had both a record number of teams competing and raised more than $1,600.”

Reddick said his group wanted to thank its main contributors, including the Carlisle-Branson Funeral Service & Crematory, Franciscan Health-Mooresville and South Central Indiana-REMC. They each contributed $200.

The $100 contributors included: Anonymous; Anthem, Inc.; China Buffet-Martinsville; Sally and Family: and Siddons Law Office, LLC.

Proceeds from the event are used to help the MCCL tutors as they work with individuals lacking basic literacy skills and preparing to take high school equivalency tests.

Refreshments for the event were provided by Bran & Short’s Coffee House and Sheila’s Bakery Unlimited.
